Rice Sock Heating Pads: A Practical Homemade Gift
By Kelly · Updated 2026-10-17
Handmade heating pads are a practical solution for soothing muscle aches or warming cold sheets during winter. By using 100% cotton textiles and pantry staples like rice, you can create a reusable therapeutic gift in less than half an hour.
Basic No-Sew Rice Sock
Adults · 10 min · about $1
- 100% cotton crew sock (unused)
- 3 cups uncooked long-grain white rice
- Cardboard tube (from a paper towel roll)
- 12-inch piece of cotton twine
- Scissors
- Inspect the sock to ensure it is 100% cotton; synthetic fibers like polyester or nylon can melt or catch fire in the microwave.
- Insert the cardboard tube into the neck of the sock to act as a wide-mouth funnel.
- Pour the uncooked rice through the tube until the sock is approximately two-thirds full.
- Remove the tube and tie a tight overhand knot in the neck of the sock, leaving about two inches of fabric at the top.
- Wrap the cotton twine tightly around the base of the knot and secure it with a double knot for extra reinforcement.
- Trim any excess twine with scissors, ensuring the knot remains secure.
Lavender Scented Neck Wrap
Adults · 20 min · about $3
- 100% cotton knee-high sock or upcycled t-shirt sleeve
- 4 cups uncooked long-grain white rice
- 2 tablespoons dried lavender buds
- Sewing machine or hand-sewing needle
- All-purpose cotton thread
- Large mixing bowl
- Combine the uncooked rice and dried lavender buds in a large mixing bowl, stirring until the lavender is evenly distributed.
- If using a t-shirt sleeve, turn it inside out and sew one end shut using a tight straight stitch, then turn it right-side out.
- Fill the sock or sleeve with the rice and lavender mixture using a funnel or jar.
- Fold the raw edges of the open end inward by half an inch to create a clean seam.
- Pin the opening shut and sew across the top twice to ensure the rice cannot leak out.
- Shake the wrap to distribute the scent and filling evenly.
Heating Instructions and Safety
- Place the heating pad in the microwave along with a small, microwave-safe cup of water to prevent the rice from scorching.
- Heat on high for 30-second increments, shaking the sock between intervals to eliminate hot spots.
- Do not exceed 2 minutes of total heating time.
- Always test the temperature on the inside of your wrist before applying it to a sensitive area.
- Never leave the microwave unattended while heating the sock.
- If the sock begins to smell like burnt popcorn, the rice has been scorched and the sock should be discarded.
These pads can also be used as cold packs. Place the rice sock in a sealed plastic bag and store it in the freezer for at least two hours before use.
